Dr Ian Sage has over 30 years experience in the development and exploitation of functional molecular materials, and in their practical application in devices, ready-for-use formulations, and in processing and manufacturing routes for their use. Some of his main fields of work have included:

• Development of new liquid crystal materials and mixtures for display use, including formulations which became industry standard materials
• Invention and demonstration of a composite damage detection and measurement system based on triboluminescent materials
• Development of thermochromic printing inks
• Development of molecular electronic materials and platforms including a silicon platform for single molecule electronics
• Invention of new liquid crystal device modes
• Development of a preconcentrator system for ultra-trace chemical detection
• Development of an icing detection system for aeroplane safety assurance

In addition to these technical fields of work he has played a leading role in technical support, marketing, IP protection and exploitation, and has extensive experience in running multidisciplinary collaborative developments which include both industry and academic project partners.
